Condoleezza Rice was born in 1954 in Birmingham, Alabama, the only child of high school teacher Angelena and minister John. Rice was reared in the Titusville district of Birmingham and later on the Stillman College campus in Tuscaloosa, where her father was employed. After the family relocated to Denver, Colorado, Rice enrolled at St. Mary’s Academy, a Catholic school for only female students, in 1967. She entered the University of Denver after receiving her diploma at the age of 16, where she later earned a BA in political science at the age of 19. She received her degree from the of Notre Dame with an MA in the corresponding subject in 1975.

Career

Rice was appointed George W. Bush’s national security advisor following the 2000 election, making her the very first woman to hold the role. Prior to 9/11, she participated actively in conversations about terrorism and even scheduled a discussion about a new strategy for national security for the day of the assaults. After 9/11, Rice met with George Tenet, director of the CIA, to reaffirm that the administration had authorised the use of torture in questioning alleged members of Al Qaeda. She later turned out to be a prominent supporter of the Iraqi invasion in 2003.

Rice was Bush’s choice to succeed Colin Powell as Secretary of State after his 2004 reelection. In this capacity, Rice worked to reform US policy via her “Transformational Diplomacy” agenda, promoting the growth of democratic regimes in the Middle East. Additionally, Rice was essential in efforts to counter nuclear threats from Iran and North Korea. She recorded the most miles as Secretary of State during this period thanks to her extensive travel.
